What Will You Make Today? is a non-fiction picture book that invites children to explore the many ways they can make a difference in the world.

In a world bursting with possibilities, what will you make today? Will you make believe? Will you make noise? Will you make a wish? Will you make an excuse? Will you make things right? Will you make up your mind? Will you make a difference?

A series of questions subtly builds perspective from a personal standpoint, culminating in a wholistic view of the world. What Will You Make Today? aims to show children how their choices can effect change and make an impact in their own lives, in the lives of others and in the world.

The colourful, detailed illustrations in this visual narrative, makes the text sing. Will you make a home? shows a bird or possum box being remounted on a tree by a group of children and Will you make something for today? involves three children planting a tree which tomorrow will provide shelter and a home for animals.
A thoughtful beautiful book, for children young and old, teeming with possibilities. The simple text will engage the reader to the end, whilst the illustrations have so much detail to discover.

Naturopolis

SHORTLISTED, CBCA NEW ILLUSTRATOR OF THE YEAR
NOTABLE, CBCA EVE POWNALL AWARD
LONGLIST, ABIA (SMALL PUBLISHER) CHILDREN’S BOOK OF THE YEAR

Illustrated Children’s Picture Book
Due Date: 1 September 2022

Written by Deborah Frenkel and Illustrated by Ingrid Bartkowiak

Look closer, look with care
And you may find a forest…

Among the steel and stone canyons of the city, nature flourishes in tiny, tenacious ways. Follow the ant (Iridomyrmex purpureus) to discover the scraps of wilderness hiding in plain sight in this lyrical celebration of urban flora and fauna.

Naturopolis is a wonderful acknowledgement of the unseen, and the world that awaits the viewer, eager to connect with nature. You don’t have to go far to find what is waiting for us beneath our feet.

A book that speaks to young people on every level, as is exactly what they need now.
— JACKIE FRENCH AM
Naturopolis is a stunning picture book, taking readers on a quest through a sprawling city to find the hidden natural landscapes waiting for discovery. Each page explores a new place — fern fronds growing in gutters, mushrooms glowing in the underpass — with a gorgeous melody like the one above, followed by some fascinating facts to feed the curiosity bound to be brewing in little (and big) minds. Brought to us by Deborah Frenkel (the stunning words), Ingrid Bartkowiak (the beautiful illustrations) and Storytorch Press (bringing it all together), Naturopolis is a picture book winner.
— Shaye Wardrop, KIDS BOOK REVIEW
Ingrid Bartkowiak’s artwork makes even a dandelion look beautiful. There is careful detail but also poetic softness in the colours and design that encourage the reader to pause and observe. The text is lyric and imaginative. A book to treasure as it shows children such an appealing and informative way of observing the world around us.
— Mia Macrossan, STORYLINKS REVIEWS
A first children’s book for both creators, Naturopolis feels assured and confident. The text reads as though a poet and a naturalist have sat down together over afternoon tea, not to negotiate a shared view but instead to share with each other the world they see. The result is a lovely combination of prose-poetry describing tiny landscapes hidden within the ‘great grey city, all steel and stone, tile and tar’, and bite-sized bundles of interesting factual detail about the flora and fauna to be found there. Bartkowiak’s painted landscapes somehow echo Jeannie Baker (despite the differing medium) while Frenkel’s language is descriptively elegant as well as playful. The book invites us to ‘Go gentle with shadows and secrets here: The silence is easily bruised’ and holds our hand pleasingly through that calm journey. (Content warning: there’s a page very full of impressively realistic-looking huntsman spiders!)

Great and Small

SHORTLIST, FOREVABILITY AWARDS

Illustrated Children’s Picture Book
Due Date: 1 July 2022

Written by Alison McLennan and Illustrated by Connah Brecon

For a tiny unicorn, Eunice has big dreams. She really wants to compete in the Great Unicorn Games, but even with all the effort and practice she can muster, she’s just no competition for all these able-bodied athletes. That’s when the most wonderful idea turns into a truly great reality. A celebration of universal design and our unique abilities, Great and Small celebrates what unifies us - our glorious diversity.

Great and Small will be a delightful book to share with any child or group of children aged 3 to 8 years. It celebrates diversity, encourages unique abilities and enjoyment in participation. There is an enthusiasm in Eunice, the Unicorn that may be inspirational for little athletes.
— Sandy Driessens, STORYLINKS REVIEWS
McLennan’s story is a fantastic showcase of diversity as it highlights the strengths of each and every animal. Eunice enters a sports competition but can’t beat the other competitors due to her size. But Eunice doesn’t give up, so she sets out with her friends to create her own competition where every animal is able to shine. It’s an inspiring story, one that will teach younger kids the importance of determination and inclusiveness.

With vibrant illustrations paired with a heartfelt message, Great and Small is a standout story, perfect for readers aged 2+..
— BETTER READING KIDS
Great and Small is a charming reminder that everyone is gifted and unique in their own special way.
— ELLIE COLE OAM Australian Paralympian
Eunice the differently-abled unicorn, has a very big heart. Unfortunately it’s not quite big enough to help win her the high jump, or the long jump, or the discus – all of which she longs to excel in. Happily, Eunice also has a rather large brain and is able to think up different and unusual ways to include all of her differently-abled friends in their own sporting competition. It’s not quite the Special Olympics, but it’s close!

This book has a gorgeous message and is full of energy and spark. Eunice is an unusual looking unicorn – not your typical pink and purple with sparkly horn, but rather someone with differently-shaped eyes and a slightly uneven stance. There’s something a little disconcerting about Eunice - it’s not always possible to know in which direction she is gazing, or if she’s looking directly at you.

This book with its ableist message and very interesting array of characters, is certainly something to behold. There is no doubt that it will open up important discussion about inclusion, or that it will make readers think about how they individually respond when someone presents differently to the norm. The colourful interior with characters that are not always easy on the eye, is a welcome and clever directive that certainly makes readers stop and think about reaction and expectation – unusual within a picture book and as such, very apparent.

This message and stance around disability is timely, especially with our current societal conversations relating to inclusion and sporting competitions.

Maybe we could all step back and take a leaf out of dear little Eunice’s book in finding a way for everyone to participate, no matter their skill level. At the very least, we could dab ourselves with a touch of that rainbow-glittery sparkle from her mane.

Family Fridge Flyer!

Our Bush Capital

Illustrated Children’s Picture Book
Released 1 February 2020

Written by Samantha Tidy and Illustrated by Juliette Dudley

The flagship publication for moving Storytorch Press into a much bigger world, and the start of something truly wonderful. The book has brought families together during a year that truly has left us searching for new adjectives.

Canberra is where my heart is full, of people, places memorable. Our Bush Capital is not only a celebration of the nation’s capital, its seasons, festivals and cultural institutions, but the wonder of a childhood spent finding new adventures within the city’s unique landscape.

Our Bush Capital was a crowdfunded publication, that exceeded all expectations. Not only did the city of Canberra get behind this celebration of the nation’s capital, but two tourism organisations sponsored the book, to ensure that it was published, and that one copy of the book was given to every federal MP and senator. It was read out in ACT Parliament by the Early Childhood and Education Minister and celebrated in parliament by other members.

A fantastic book for home libraries, wherever you live.
— Sarah Steed, Kids' Book Review
Samantha Tidy is a writer of deep sensitivity, always engaged in finding ways to bring us together and celebrate our goodness as human beings. Her previous works speak loudly of this and Our Bush Capital shows us, the residents of Canberra, in a human light. We crave to be seen as community, not as an adjunct of federal parliament, and this book surely and deftly does this.
— Barbie Robinson, Living Arts Canberra
